Buying a used tractor is a serious investment. The right machine can serve for decades, while a poor choice can mean repair costs of up to several million forints. Make sure to review the points below before signing the contract.
1. Operating hours and age
Check the hour meter and compare it with the machine's external condition. A 10-year-old tractor with 3000 operating hours is generally a good buy, but if the wear is not consistent with the numbers, it can be suspicious.
2. Engine condition
After starting, watch the exhaust smoke: blue smoke can indicate oil burning, while white can indicate coolant leakage. It should start within 1-2 minutes even from a cold start.
3. Oils and fluids
Check the color and level of the engine oil, hydraulic oil, and coolant. Milky oil indicates water contamination, which is a serious problem.
4. Hydraulic system
Test the lifting mechanism through several cycles. It should not be jerky, slow, or noisy. Check the hoses for leaks.
5. Transmission and clutch
Try every gear. The clutch pedal should not be too soft or too heavy.
6. Tires
The price of new tires might surprise you, a set of tractor tires can cost up to 1-2 million forints. Check the tread depth and cracks.
7. Cab
Air conditioning, heating, seat condition, and instrument functionality. Signs of corrosion on the cab mean repair costs.
8. Electrical system
All lights, signals, and switches should work. The age of the battery is also important.
9. Service book and papers
Ask for the service book and all owner-related documents. Traceable maintenance is worth gold.
10. Test drive
Always take the tractor out in a working situation, attach an implement and test it under load. Only then will hidden faults be revealed.
