What is PTO, a hydraulic circuit, or power category?

Looking for a used tractor or agricultural machine and seeing abbreviations like PTO, 3DW, Powershift, or 4WD everywhere? You’re not alone. In the world of used agricultural machinery, technical terms can seem complicated at first, but understanding them is essential for making the right decision.

In this article, we explain the most common tractor-related terms in a clear and simple way so you can choose your equipment with confidence.


What is PTO?

PTO (Power Take-Off) is a shaft located at the rear (and sometimes at the front) of a tractor that transfers engine power to attached equipment.

For example:

  • mower
  • baler
  • mulcher
  • manure spreader

What should you check when buying a used tractor?

  • Is there a PTO shaft guard? This is essential for safety.
  • What speeds does it operate at? 540 / 540E / 1000 RPM.
  • Does it run smoothly under load?

Important: the driveshaft (cardan shaft) is the mechanical connection between the tractor and the implement - it should also be checked for wear, bearings, and protective covers.

What is a hydraulic circuit?

The hydraulic circuit uses oil pressure to operate cylinders - for example lifting a baler, tipping a trailer, or moving a loader.

The more hydraulic circuits available, the more functions you can control at the same time.

What do 2DW, 3DW, or 4DW mean?
DW = double-acting hydraulic circuit.

  • 2DW = 2 pairs of connectors
  • 3DW = 3 pairs of connectors

This indicates how many separate hydraulic movements you can control.

What should you check?

  • Mechanical or electro-hydraulic control?
  • Leak-free connectors?
  • Are there enough circuits for your intended implements?

What is a power category?

A tractor’s power is measured in HP or kW.
For example: 66 kW ≈ 90 HP

Power determines what size implement the tractor can operate.

Important: Don’t just look at horsepower! Also consider:

  • the tractor’s own weight
  • axle load
  • traction
  • terrain conditions

A 90 HP tractor performs differently on flat land compared to hilly terrain.

Other common technical terms

  • 4WD = four-wheel drive
  • TDF = French equivalent of PTO (common on imported machines)
  • Closed hydraulic system = more efficient, modern solution
  • Air-conditioned cab / suspended axle = comfort and handling features
  • Powershift = gear shifting without clutch
  • Power Shuttle = direction change without clutch (useful for loading)
  • Front lift / front hydraulics = hydraulic lifting arms at the front of the tractor
  • AdBlue system = emission reduction system for diesel engines
  • ISOBUS compatibility = communication system between tractor and implements
  • Joystick control = one-hand control of loaders, hydraulics, or gears
  • Independent front suspension (IFS, TLS) = suspended front axle
  • Three-point linkage = standard rear attachment system
  • Driveshaft (cardan shaft) = mechanical connection between tractor and implement
