How to winterize your GPS guidance system so it works flawlessly in spring

To ensure these systems start without issues in spring, proper winter preparation is essential.

GPS-based guidance systems are now part of everyday operations on many farms. Whether for spraying, fertilizing, or seeding, they improve accuracy and efficiency while saving time and costs. However, to ensure they work flawlessly in spring, proper winter preparation is essential.

Update the software before storage

Guidance system software needs regular updates. At the end of the year, new versions are often released with bug fixes and improvements.

It’s recommended to install updates before storage, and create a backup of settings and data.

Storage: dry, protected, frost-free environment

Displays, antennas, and control units are sensitive electronic devices, so it’s not recommended to leave them in the machine during winter.

Store them in a dry, heated place and clean the connectors. Keep cables and accessories separately in a well-organized, secure location.

Waterproof does not mean winter-proof

Water resistance does not protect against frost, temperature fluctuations, or condensation. These can cause moisture buildup and corrosion.

Stable, protected storage helps prevent springtime failures.

Don’t forget the sensors

Systems often include tilt sensors, speed sensors, or compass sensors. These should also be stored indoors.

In spring, don’t forget to recalibrate them for accurate operation.

Organize accessories

Cables, batteries, SD cards, and documentation are essential for restarting in spring.

Keep everything in one place, well organized and preferably labeled.

Don’t wait until spring to discover problems

GPS-based systems only work reliably if properly maintained. Winter preparation is far cheaper than repairing issues at the start of the season.
